So how does the Hollywood Spectra Peel by Lutronic differ to the other carbon facials in the market?

Most carbon facials only involve the application of the carbon lotion, followed by removing the lotion with a Q-Switch device. The Hollywood Spectra Peel involves 3 different steps; following the application of the carbon lotion the device heats up the lotion so that it fuses into the pores more optimally, then the skin is exfoliated by removing the lotion with the laser; then lastly, the third step of the laser treatment involves a custom setting tailored to the client’s specific skin concern. The treatment is a reasonably quick and comfortable procedure, lasting between 45 to 60 minutes altogether.

Since we introduced the Hollywood Spectra into our clinic ‘Pavilion Cosmetic Medicine’ and part of our list of offerings, I have actively incorporated this particular treatment into my regular routine, so let me break down each step of the treatment and my personal experience so far.

Treatment overview

at a glance

Skin cleansing

Skin cleansing and lotion being applied to the skin

Your skin is firstly double cleansed then the Spectra carbon lotion is applied to the skin

This carbon lotion is different to other carbon lotions as it contains nano particles, thereby making the molecules of the lotion smaller than other carbon lotions available in the current market. This allows for better and deeper penetration of the product into the pores.

The carbon lotion does not have a scent and feels slightly oily on the skin. The colour of the carbon is black, but once removed you don’t see any remnants of this on the skin.

Gentle heating of the lotion

Gentle heating of lotion on Spectra mode

This technique of heating up the lotion increases the bond of the lotion to the outer layer of skin (like glue); and is therefore able to get right into the pores and attach itself to dead skin cells, dirt, debris and sebum.

This can feel a bit hot in some areas, but otherwise is a nice warm feeling on the skin. Only one pass is needed all over.

There is a slight smell whilst the carbon is being heated up, however this is not too overpowering and only lasts during the treatment.

Laser exfoliation

Using the Hollywood Spectra, we remove the carbon to exfoliate and decongest the skin

Laser exfoliation

Using the Hollywood Spectra Q-Switch laser we remove the carbon and this step effectively exfoliates and decongests the skin.

There is no discomfort at all when removing the carbon, however, it is VERY loud and can be quite overwhelming to some at first. When performing this treatment on our clients, we like to do just one pulse, so one can feel (and most importantly) hear, what the experience will be like before we treat the rest of the face.

When hearing the loud sounding device, one may be led to assume that the treatment will be a painful experience, but trust me, it’s not at all!

Laser toning

Laser toning passes on the face

Custom Laser Toning

This last pass of the laser is customisable to your skin type and your specific concerns. The common concerns we treat in this step include:

  1. Laser toning for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and overall sun-induced freckles or sun spots.
  2. Gold Toning for post-inflammatory erythema (redness).
  3. Dermal remodelling for collagen and elastin stimulation.
my take on the Hollywood Spectra Laser Peel

In conclusion

I have personally tried both the laser toning for freckles and dermal remodelling settings on my skin. I found that the laser toning feels slightly prickly, and perhaps, even a little bit annoying on the surface of the skin, particularly on the cheeks and nose areas. Depending on your skin’s preferences, anywhere from 2 to 5 passes of this is typically performed, however it takes only a few minutes for it to be all over and done with.

Dermal remodelling feels nice and warm – similarly to our Laser Genesis treatment. It mostly feels like warm raindrops falling on the skin – just HEAVENLY!

I have had 2 sessions of the Hollywood Spectra Peel between February and May 2023, and the results I’ve noticed are similar of that to a chemical peel, but there is no downtime or any irritation, flaking or peeling of the skin. I personally love that I am also able to customise the third pass to my personal concerns, and most importantly, because I am a big wuss when it comes to any pain, I find the treatment comfort level around a 1/10 (with 1 being no discomfort and 10 being the most uncomfortable) – that’s for me, anyway.

This treatment is suitable to those who want to refresh their skin before a special event (yes that’s right you brides and grooms!), but also those wanting to focus on longer- term results too. Treatment is ideally-suited for oily, acneic skin or acne-prone skin, however, can be customised to suit nearly all skin types and colours.
