What are cheek fillers?
Cheek augmentation using dermal fillers is a minimally invasive injectable cosmetic treatment. Cheek fillers are used to restore volume where tissue has degenerated with age, or to add projection and definition to cheeks that are naturally lacking in volume.
Cheek fillers are injectable hyaluronic acid-based gels. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and is particularly abundant in the dermis. It is one of the main components of a fresh, youthful appearance, as well a major component of tissue repair.
There are numerous types of fillers available and the outcome you desire will determine the type of filler used. Generally, a firmer dermal filler intended for deeper injection will be used for cheek augmentation, but sometimes a combination of fillers is required to achieve best possible results for your specific needs and goals. A numbing cream is used prior to treatment; patients usually find they feel very little or no discomfort. The dermal filler is then injected into the treatment areas with a very fine needle, giving an immediate result.
The procedure itself usually takes around 30 minutes.
As with all dermal filler injections, some mild redness and swelling at the treatment sites should be expected for the first few days. Some bruising may also occur at the point of injection however, in most cases, this can be covered with makeup and usually resolves over 3-5 days.

Generally, only one cheek filler treatment is required for long-lasting results. In some cases, a “top-up” may be required after 1-2 weeks when the final results are visible after any residual swelling subsides.
What is the downtime and recovery with cheek filler?
One of the many benefits of dermal filler treatment is that there is minimal, if any, downtime. There will likely be some localised redness and minor swelling, but this should gradually disappear after 1-3 days. Sometimes bruising may occur at the injection site, lasting around 3-5 days.
How long do cheek fillers last?
The dermal fillers used for cheek augmentation are generally more dense and viscous – and therefore longer lasting – than dermal fillers used for lip enhancement. Cheek fillers can last from 9-18 months, depending on the specific type of filler used and your individual response.
